De erudiete en zeer actieve politiek commentator uit Brussel Gilbert Doctorow is in België minder bekend dan in de internationale media, waar hij regelmatig aan het woord is in politieke programma’s zoals WION of de talkshow van Glenn Diesen. Onlangs verscheen het volumineuze derde deel van zijn War Diaries, dat de Russisch-Oekraïense oorlog in 2025 beschrijft. Een kanjer van 719 pagina’s in groot formaat. Op 16 augustus publiceerde Doctorow in het Engels een open brief aan de Belgische premier, die het lezen en overwegen waard is.

De commentator merkt op dat het fysieke voortbestaan van België en zijn bevolking vandaag op het spel staan doordat de NAVO steeds provocerender intervenieert in de Russisch-Oekraïense oorlog, wat vraagt om een Russische militaire reactie. Die zullen we krijgen, stelt de auteur, zodra president Poetin zich neerlegt bij de eisen van de Kremlinelite en van het grote publiek in Rusland die beslissende tegenaanvallen op Oekraïne en zijn ondersteuners willen. Of als Poetin door een paleisrevolutie neergehaald wordt en vervangen wordt door vastberadener en agressievere Russische patriotten die niet zullen aarzelen het nodige te doen om de Russische afschrikking te herstellen, die Poetin in de loop van de voorbije vier jaren tot nul herleid heeft.

Als het zover is, en dat is in de nabije toekomst gezien de extreme druk waaraan Rusland nu is blootgesteld door de droneaanvallen op zijn infrastructuur, kan je ervan verzekerd zijn dat Rusland de NAVO zal aanvallen met zijn tactische kernwapens, geplaatst op zijn hypersonische raketten waartegen geen afweer mogelijk is. En België zal bovenaan het lijstje van de onder vuur genomen NAVO-landen staan. België is immers gastland voor NAVO-hoofdkwartieren, voor SHAPE en voor de Europese instellingen die “onder het ‘leiderschap’ van Ursula von der Leyen nu bezig zijn met een oorlog tegen Rusland zonder dat ze daarvoor ooit een mandaat van de Europese volkeren gekregen hebben.”

De betrokkenheid van de Europese NAVO-staten is geen kwestie meer van gissen. Meerdere staten hebben al gesnoefd daarmee. Zopas nog verklaarde de Times of London openlijk dat Britse precisiedrones door Kiev gebruikt worden om vernietigende aanvallen op Russische olieraffinaderijen uit te voeren. Andere vermoedelijke leveranciers zijn Frankrijk, Duitsland en hier of daar een Scandinavisch land.

Zoals u allicht weet, schrijft Doctorow aan de Wever, is de Russische doctrine van nucleaire reactie op niet-nucleaire staten zoals België dat een nucleaire aanval op de NAVO kan als die staten een bedreiging worden voor de veiligheid van de Russische staat, wat vandaag het geval is. U weet allicht ook dat de Russen artikel 5 van het NAVO-handvest hebben omgedraaid: daden van agressie tegen Rusland door eender welke NAVO-lidstaat mogen door Rusland beantwoord worden door tegenaanvallen op eender welke of op alle NAVO-lidstaten.

En Doctorow sluit af met deze vraag aan de Belgische premier: “Omwille van al de genoemde redenen vraag ik u in alle ernst dat u België en zijn bevolking verdedigt tegen een Russische nucleaire aanval door in het publiek te verklaren dat de door de NAVO aangestookte, zogenaamd Oekraïense drone- en raketaanvallen op de Russische Federatie onmiddellijk moeten stoppen, dat de EU en de NAVO nu moeten gaan samenzitten met de Russen om een einde aan de oorlog te onderhandelen op een manier die rekening houdt met de Russische veiligheidsbekommernissen inzake de NAVO-aanwezigheid in Oekraïne van voor februari 2022 en met Ruslands wens om een nieuwe veiligheidsarchitectuur voor Europa overeen te komen die op een eerlijke manier alle landen van ons continent beschermt, niet slechts enkele zoals nu het geval is.”

An Open Letter to Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever

I address you today as a Belgian citizen to his Prime Minister.

In essays which I published last December, I praised you for your courage and extraordinary political-organizational skills. You received the unanimous backing of Parliament including from the Left Opposition and cutting across the linguistic divide, to proceed later the same day in the European Council with rejection of a resolution backed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for confiscation of the 200 -billion euros of Russian state assets held in Euroclear.

You rightly denounced this hoped for means of lending nonrepayable funds to Ukraine wholly at Russia’s expense. You rightly argued that such an illegal confiscation in peacetime risked bankrupting Belgium when the Russians took their case to the courts. More generally you said it would discredit Europe as custodian of sovereign assets, leading to a collapse of the global financial system. You won and I saluted you for this great personal and national victory

In the aftermath of that victory, you explained to the general public why your personal sympathies are with Ukraine. Good! That enhances your credibility if you follow the advice I offer you below.

At issue now is not the financial system but the continued physical existence of Belgium as a state and a people.  I say that because the ongoing ever escalating, ever more provocative intervention of NATO in the Russia-Ukraine war is begging for a Russian military response – which we will get in due time when President Putin acquiesces in the demands of Kremlin elites and of the broad Russian public for decisive counter strikes against Ukraine and its backers in the West OR when Putin is overthrown in a palace coup and replaced by more determined and aggressive Russian patriots who will not hesitate to do what must be done to restore Russian deterrence, which Putin has dissipated to the point of nil in the past four years.

And when that day comes, surely in the near future given the extreme stress Russia is now experiencing from the drone strikes that are destroying its energy infrastructure, then you may be sure that the Russians will attack NATO using their tactical nuclear weapons mounted on unstoppable hypersonic missiles. And Belgium will be at the top of the targeted NATO countries. After all, Belgium is host to NATO headquarters, to SHAPE and to the European Institutions which, under the ‘leadership’ of Ursula von der Leyen, are waging war on Russia right now without ever obtaining a mandate from the European peoples.

As you may be aware, the involvement of European NATO states in the ongoing attacks deep inside Russia is no longer a matter of conjecture. It is boasted by several of these states. In the past day the Times of London openly stated that UK precision drones are being used by Kiev to make these devastating strikes on Russian refineries. Other likely suppliers include France, Germany and one or another Scandinavian country.

I make this analysis of the current situation on the basis of my expertise in Russian affairs first established by my Ph.D. in this field from Columbia University (New York) and developed day after day, week after week in the last 15 years as an essayist, first on the internet platform of La Libre Belgique and then on my own websites, as well as a regular interviewee on Indian television channels WION, News X World, Firstpost, and on private youtube channels watched by hundreds of thousands of subscribers around the world, including inside Belgium – “Judging Freedom” and the channel of Professor Glenn Diesen. I have republished these essays as War Diaries: the Russia-Ukraine War in three volumes from 2022 to 2026. I mention these references to establish that I have been deeply committed to studying this war and have been watching with alarm the highly provocative actions of NATO Member States which de facto have become co-belligerents with Ukraine.

As you may be aware, the Russian doctrine on nuclear response to non-nuclear powers like Belgium is to allow nuclear attack on NATO when their assistance to Ukraine becomes a menace to their state security, which is the situation today.  You may also be aware that the Russians have turned tables on Article 5: acts of aggression against Russia by any NATO Member State allows Russia to strike back at any and all NATO Member States.

For all of the above reasons, I earnestly ask that you defend Belgium and its people from a Russian nuclear attack by publicly declaring that the NATO-abetted, nominally Ukrainian drone and missile attacks on the Russian Federation must stop at once, that the EU/NATO must now sit down with the Russians to negotiate an end to the war in a way that addresses Russia’s security concerns over NATO’s presence in Ukraine before February 2022 and Russia’s wish to agree a new security architecture for Europe that fairly protects all countries of this Continent, not just some, as at present.
